(Antwerp 1584–1669 Ghent) Saint Catherine of Siena, oil on canvas, 249 x 153 cm, unframed Provenance: Private collection, Rome We are grateful to Professor Hans Vlieghe, who, after having examined the present painting in the original, has confirmed the attribution to Gaspar de Crayer, specifically pointing out the quality of the drapery and the rendering of the face. He has dated it to circa 1655. This newly discovered, hitherto unknown altarpiece follows the type of saint representation typical for De Crayer, perhaps best known from the series he painted for the Monasterio de San Francisco in Burgos, six of which are now in the Museo del Prado.
