A teenage prodigy in the 1970s with a precocious sense of his black identity, Sirles focused on making art specifically for black people. His paintings and sculptures, which draw heavily on African imagery and style, were shown at numerous venues, including Bill Thomas' Black Man's Art Gallery on Haight Street in San Francisco, considered the first gallery in the U.S. to focus exclusively on art by black people. Sirles' statement from a BlackMan's Art Gallery 1971 catalogue: The Gallery has shown me that Black people are creative, and that Black art is something beautiful, something to be proud of, a reality representing the spirit of Black people here in America where we live and experience the American nightmare, day by day.
