William Standing (1904-1951) Native American on Horseback Second quarter of the 20th century. The historically accurate depiction of a brave on horseback, oil on artist's board signed lower right in red pigment. William Standing, a member of the Assiniboine tribe was born and died in Montana. But his formal art training came during his time at Haskell Indian College in Lawrence, Kansas. He is highly regarded for his historically accurate depictions of Native American life, Buffalo Hunts and the world of the Northern High Plains. First hand accounts from tribe elders inspired many of his sketches. Among Standing's various life experiences and considerable accomplishments, he also co-produced a book on Assiniboine life, The Land of the Nakoda.
