Lydia's country is near Punmu in the Great Sandy Desert of WA. When threatened by severe drought in the early 1970s her people had little choice but to leave their traditional country in the desert and move further toward the coast. They settled at the Old La Grange Mission on the coast which is now called Bidyadanga. The community is located two hours south of Broome. Lydia first began painting in 2007 when Daniel Walbidi and Emily Rohr initiated the Yulpara artists group, and as time passed and many of the older artists passed away, Lydia's skill as a painter and her consequent reputation grew, gaining her significant attention amongst collectors. According to Lydia, "Snake in this rockhole. He underground, he quiet one. This big rockhole. This good hunting place we dig for eggs. This one desert side. This mummy and father country. This Mangala country."
