Oil on wood panel. Jan Cossiers's work focuses on historical painting, religious themes, and portraits. He is considered one of the leading artists in Antwerp after Rubens's death in 1640, as well as a significant colourist throughout Flanders in the 17th century. The boy has a lively expression on his face, as if waiting for a response from the viewer. The image is primarily in shades of brown, reflected primarily in the background and the boy's clothing.
