Attributed to Lorser Feitelson (1898-1978) and Nathalie Newking (American, 1904-1954) Peasant and Child, 1925 Oil on canvas laid on board 19-3/4 x 16 inches (50.2 x 40.6 cm) Bears signature lower right: Feitelson Inscribed on backing board: "Peasant And Child " / Lorser Feitelson / 1925 PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York; Private collection, Mesquite, Texas. This painting was produced in 1925 during the early years of Lorser Feitelson and Nathalie Newking's marriage. The two artists went abroad to Paris where they worked in a similar figurative style highly influenced by the Italian primitives. During the 1920s, their subject matter often became quite close to one another, with certain distinctive exceptions in draftsmanship. This work possesses qualities consistent with the work of Feitelson, such as the way the drapery is handled, the general compositional layout, color and modeling. On the other hand, the way the faces and hands are drawn points to the work of another hand. Since this painting was preserved within a collection of Nathalie Newking's art, it seems likely that Newking collaborated with Feitelson on a work he began but she likely completed. We wish to thank Wendy Van Haerlem, President of the Feitelson/Lundeberg Art Foundation, and Jale Erzen, for sharing information on Lorser Feitelson and Nathalie Newking's artistic relationship.
