Oil painting of Meiringen Valley Switzerland by artist Gabriel Loppe. Untitled 1913 Oil on artist's board Measures 11.25" x15.25" sight size, and 17" x 21" x 1.5" overall including frame. Notes: Painting appears to be unsigned, although there is some illegible writing on the front lower center that appears to be a date. There is a paper label verso identifying the artist and the location and date of the work. Possibly a gifting to a friend. The name Joseph Thevenot appears in the text verso. About the artist: Gabriel Loppe, (Swiss/French 1825-1913), was a pioneering alpine climber-artist. Loppe was the first painter to work at high altitudes during climbing expeditions and is considered to be the founder of the peintres-alpinistes school. He also became the first foreigner to be made a member of the prestigious Alpine Club in London. Loppe's works were highly collected during his lifetime by English climbers and summer tourist to high alpine regions around Mount Blanc and Chamonix.
