Ganesh Pyne (born June 11 1937, Kolkata India -died March 12th 2013, Kolkata, India) was one of the most notable contemporary artists of the Bengal School of Art who had developed his own style of “poetic surrealism”, fantasy and dark imagery around the theme of Bengal folklore and mythology. He was a legendary painter, described as an artist’s artist, philosopher’s philosopher and master fantasist of them all. During his five-decade career his paintings were exhibited around the world-Paris, London, Washington and Germany. He is known for small tempera paintings rich in imagery and symbols. He was influenced by great painters as Hals, Rembrandt, Tagore and Paul Klee. He developed two important stylistic features-distortion and exaggeration which he used to explore the deep recesses of his fantastical imagination to create images of disquieting creatures. His paintings have been sold by all well know auction housed all over the world and collected by individuals and museums around the world.
