NOTE: "The Lost Memling is my homage to the great Northern Renaissance portraitist Hans Memling… The paint brush and sharpened pencil in my painting represent the tools that I use, but they also allude to the careful observation and exacting craft of Memling himself. The motto 'De Bien En Mieuls' was painted by Memling on a trompe l'oeil ribboned band on the reverse side of the portrait. The language is a variant of medieval French and means 'from good to better.'" - Alan Magee
