An oil on canvas portrait painting depicting acclaimed physician Theophilus Parvin (1829-1898). Parvin was an important influence in American obstetrics and a pioneer in clinical teaching. American Impressionist, T.C. Steele (1847-1926) called the Hoosier state home but was known throughout the Midwest and beyond. The portrait is presented in an ornate gold gilt frame with hardware present for hanging. Included is the original cabinet card of the well-known physician, a newspaper clipping about the work of art, and a framed two-page document describing the character of Parvin. The painting belonged to the estate of Levey Brothers Company businessman, Louis H. Levey. Mr. Levey died in 1934 and the painting was acquired by the Indianapolis Medical Society (est. 1848) after the death of Mrs. Meta Levey in 1959.
