The shallow rounded sides sitting on a tapered foot to an everted rim, painted in shaded tone of cobalt blue reserved on a rich yellow enamel ground, the medallion centre depicts a leafy branch bearing two five-petalled gardenia blooms and a bud on the top, encircled in the cavetto by fruiting branches of grape, pomegranate, peach and a ribboned lotus bouquet, all between double-line borders, the underside decorated with a continuous scroll of blooming hibiscus borne on a slender meandering stem between double lines at the rim and foot. The base covered in transparent glaze with blue and white Hongzhi six character mark. Dishes of this gardenia design in underglaze-blue reserved on yellow ground first produced in the Xuande period, refer to a similar Xuande dish (picture1) in National Palace Museum,Taipei, and a Xuande dish in Edward Chow and T.Y. Chao collections. This floral design on yellow enamel found was popular in the Hongzhi (1488-1505) and Zhengde reign period, with floral design either in pomegranate or gardenia, but not produced after jiajing period. Similar dishes produced from Xuande to Jiajing are published in Ming Pottery and Porcelain by Soame Jenyns in London, 1988, on plates 102 to 104. A similar Hongzhi dish(picture 2) is collected in Victoria and Albert Museum (accession no. C.320-1921).
