Pieter Adrianus (Piet) Schipperus (Rotterdam, March 6 1840 – The Hague , 4 October 1929) was a Lower Lande painter and draftsman . Schipperus was the son of Pieter Schipperus tobacco worker (1796-1888) and Adriana Duijshart (1797-1865). He married Johanna Maria Gehrels (1834-1909) and Hillegonda Elisabeth Heijberg (1873-1951). Schipperus had a career in business, he was successively stockbroker, wine buyer and cheese merchant. As autodidact he was busy painting in his spare time. In 1869 he joined Pulchri Studio , actually reserved for professional painters. In his 32 he received a scholarship of King William III which enabled him to devote himself entirely to painting. He made landscapes , first in watercolor, later in oil. From 1874 to 1911 he was director of the Rotterdam art academy. In 1879 he became a member of Arti et Amicitiae . From 1875 to 1888 illustrated Piet Schipperus series walks through the Netherlands with pen and pencil of Jacobus Craandijk , where they went every summer by the Netherlands. In 1892 Schipperus was with Charles Rochussen invited eight tableaux vivants design, with scenes from the Dutch and German history, the golden wedding of the Duke of Saxony-Weimar and Princess Sophie . When they left they were knighted IIe class in the Order of the White Falcon . In 1910 Schipperus moved to The Hague. He died there in 1929 at the age of 89.
