1954. Canvas. oil. 50x61 cm Eduards Kalnins (1904–1988) Born in Riga. Kalniņš studied art in refuge at Evgeny Moshkevich’s art studio in Tomsk and. after returning to Latvia. at the Latvian Art Academy. During his studies. he travelled around the Netherlands and Belgium and spent the year 1928 in Berlin. In 1931. he graduated from Vilhelms Purvītis’ Landscape Painting Workshop with the diploma work After Rain (Pēc lietus). In 1935. he received the Roman Fund Scholarship from the Art Academy of Latvia for his painting Raftsmen (Plostnieki). which presented an opportunity to spend a year in Italy. In 1939. Kalniņš held a solo exhibition. during which most of his works were sold. giving him a sense of independence and security. From 1945. he worked at the Art Academy of Latvia. where he was a teacher at the Painting Department from 1945 until 1947. a docent from 1947. and a professor from 1955. Almost all post-war graduates of the Easel-Painting Workshop studied under his guidance. He also supervised diploma works from 1952. He was a member of the Sadarbs artists’ association and the Latvian Artists’ Association. and since 1945. also of the Artists’ Union of Latvia. The artist was interested in exploring the connection between painting and reality. thus starting a period of human and sea portrayals in Latvian art and focusing on depicting the life of fishermen and raising it above the ordinary. Eduards Kalniņš was the most notable Latvian seascape artist. who was concerned with emotional and in-depth perception of reality. high culture of painting. as well as refined tonal aesthetic.
