LEONID PURYGIN (RUSSIAN 1951-1995) Do Not Eat Animals, 1975 oil on panel 69.5 x 60 cm (27 1/3 x 23 5/8 in.) signed and dated on verso PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist in 1975 by Mr. Marshall Brement, Political Counseler for the US Embassy in Moscow in the 1970s and US Ambassador to Iceland from 1981-1985 LOT NOTES The two Leonid Purygin paintings in this auction are two very rare early works, painted while he was still in his mid-twenties. They were bought directly from Purygin by Mr. Marshall Brement and his wife, who were in Moscow while he was serving at Political Counselor at the US Embassy in the mid-1970s. Mr. Brement, a distinguished career Foreign Services Officer, was working at the US Embassy for the second time in his career, having spent two years there in the 1960s. While in Moscow, Mr. Brement and his wife often entertained "underground" and non-conformist artists in their home, including a young, but already amazingly talented and inimitable, Leonid Purygin.
