David Harouni (Iranian/New Orleans, b. 1962), "The Red House by the Orchard", oil on masonite, signed lower left, 16 in. x 12 in., framed. Note: David Harouni has been a fixture on the New Orleans art scene for almost twenty years, creating haunting images with his expressive brushstrokes and often mysterious color palette. An early painting by the artist, the lot offered here captures the themes of longing and alienation common to Harounis later figural works. The artist has said, My entire life has been one of migration...building bonds with a community and then being forced to desert it, creating memories and being compelled to leave the comforts of familiarity, abandoning cultures I knew and creating new memories. In this painting, the composition leads the eye to the far horizon and red-roofed structure by the line of trees that bifurcate the vertical plane of the canvas. Filling the lower right quadrant are humble stacks of hay, propped up and geometrically scattered like chess pieces on a board. The resulting image is evocative, yet compelling, reminiscent of Impressionist masterworks and uniquely Harouni. Ref.: MacCash, Doug. David Harouni Sculpture Brings Mysterious Vibe to Metairie.
