''Morning on the Li Kiang'', China, signed lower left: G.F. Brommer, signed again, titled and numbered and with copyright symbol verso: No-982-048-2522, signed again, titled and dated on an artist's label affixed to the original backing board: 1983, watercolor on paper under Plexiglas, paper size: 22'' H x 30'' W, est: $3000/5000. Note: The Brommers were part of a very early American delegation of travelers to China in 1983 and Gerald produced the present geographic work on that trip. In this Guilin harbor view, the otherworldly limestone karst landforms rise up from the Li River juxtaposed against a detailed foreground junk boat. Four crewmembers guide the boat, with it's sail down, across the harbor. Another junk and other coastal structures are visible near the shore. When Brommer exhibited the painting upon his return to California, his audience had never seen a landscape like this and thought he had created a fantasy scene.
