The study shows the representation of a forest lake with bathers and swans in the foreground. Friedrich Preller II painted with preference landscapes with heroic and mythological subjects, which have classical as well as romantic features. The study is signed lower right and inscribed in pencil retraced with a brush Fried. Preller (Weimar). The sheet is mounted at the upper edge with two hinges and framed by a mat. It is overall in good condition. The sheet is partially a little stained with a smoothed centerfold. Small tear on the right as well as occasional marginal blemishes. Otherwise overall of good impression. The sheet-sized image measures 30.6 x 42 cm. Friedrich Preller the Elder (1804-1878) Friedrich Preller II was born 1804 in Eisenach. He was educated at the Weimar School of Drawing and became a professor there in 1832. After his education he began a collaboration with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Among his supporters also was the Grand Duke Karl August, who enabled him several scholarships. Therefor Preller traveled to Italy and further studied at the Academy in Antwerp.
