HAWKINS’ lower right Dimensions: 41 x 33 cm Remains of an old label on the stretcher Mounted in wooden-Nouveau frame: 58 x 50 cm Provenance: Private collection, Brazil A balanced and impressionistic portrait in muted colors After a strict academic training, Louis Hawkins was influenced especially by the realist Jules Bastien-Lepage in his early paintings. In the 1870s, he moved to a small village near Fontainebleau and became familiar with Plein Air Painting. The later works show an increasing tendency to the Symbolist style of Puvis de Chavannes, but he painted also a few harmonious Art Nouveau or impressionist women portraits in his final years. Condition: The painting is in good, color fresh conditions, showing only the lightest framing marks. The inspection under UV light reveals two small strokes of retouching to the flowers of the headgear and upper right to the sky. The canvas has thinned out slightly and bears two patches on the reverse. The frame is slightly chipped. Louis Welden Hawkins (1849-1910) Louis Welden Hawkins was born in Stuttgart as the son of a British naval officer and the daughter of an Austrian field marshal. In 1873 he settled with his family in Paris and enrolled at the Académie Julian. In 1881 he exhibited his works for the first time at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. From 1894 to 1911 he was represented at the Salon of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Hawkins was acquainted with numerous writers, including Stéphane Mallarmé and Robert de Montesquiou.
