Paul Reed "Topeka XI" oil on unprimed shaped canvas, 1967. Titled, signed and dated on support verso. 60"H x 29"W. Paul Reed (American, 1919-2015) was the last of the six "Washington Colorists" before his recent passing last year. Alongside seminal painting peers like Gene Davis, Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis, Mr. Reed carved out his own individuality by adhering to a strategy of serial works, exploring simple color combinations of staining acrylic paints on unprimed shaped canvases. With the "Topeka" series, Reed created a five-sided canvas and a striped composition that he replicated with differing color schemes.
