Alan Flattmann (American/New Orleans, b. 1946), "Amen: New Orleans Jazz Funeral Series", 1970, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, titled, "Bryant Galleries, Inc., Jackson, MS" label and printed artist biography en verso, 16 1/4 in. x 24 in., framed. Provenance: Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman. Note: Born and raised in New Orleans, Alan Flattmann is known for his classic New Orleans scenes. He often paints familiar subjects and locations at different times and during different seasons as a way to document the changing city. In the painting offered here, he explores the theme of the jazz funeral, an event unique to New Orleans, by depicting two men part of the funeral procession as well as the preacher at the grave site. Flattmanns works from this series explore both the somber initial march to the cemetery, as well as the vibrant celebratory second line that follows the funeral and honors the deceased with a wild celebration of his/her life.
