This painting is a remarkable example of Vittorio Reggianinis early work. The study of Fragonards The Lock is both a late 19th century homage to the great French painter as well as an example of Reggianinis diversity of style. This passionate scene of two lovers locking themselves in a bedroom is depicted in a delicate and sensitive manner. Signed lower left. Born in 1858, Reggianini studied at the academy in Modena with peers such as Gaetano Bellei and Eugenio Zamphighi. After his move to Florence, he established a reputation for himself in the art market and shifted his style from historical realism to the opulence of the 18th century. He is known for his graceful rendering of interior scenes, especially highlighted in the attention he gave to clothing and upholstery.
