Hermann' Inscribed 'Lotsen=stattion bei Ha(...?)' on the stretcher Dimensions: 26.7 x 34.5 cm Gilt wooden frame: 37 x 45 cm Provenance: Private collection, Berlin Condition: The painting is in good condition consistent with the age. The varnish is darkened and over all tiny craquelé can be seen on the canvas. A few small marks and scratches can be found as well as a small hole in the left side of the depiction. There are areas with scuffing due to the frame along the edges. The frame shows traces of usage as scuffing, small tears and little loss of material. The dimensions are 26.7 x 34.5 cm, the frame measures 37 x 45 cm. Ludwig Hermann (1812-1881) Born in Greifswald, Ludwig Hermann studied the art of painting under the guidance of Johann Gottfried Schadow at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. He exhibited for the first time in 1836. In the 1830s, he became a pupil of Eugène Isabey and Eugène Lepoittevn in Paris. Hermann is well recorded for his urban and sea landscapes, which he captured both in summer and in winter. His works show an influence of the romantic school, especially by Barend Cornelis Koekkoek.
