Dorothea Maetzel Johannsen (1886-1930) Dorothea Johannsen was born in Lensahn, Germany in 1886. In 1905 she went to study at the industrial school in Hamburg, where she graduated with an art teaching diploma, and started working as a teacher in Schleswig. With her husband, the painter and architect Emil Maetzel, she moved to Berlin in 1918, where she took drawing lessons from Lovis Corinth. She was a founding member of the ‘Hamburgischen Sezession’ and took part in their group exhibitions and events. In 1925 she went to Paris for a six month-long study visit. Upon her return she and her husband moved into a home in Hamburg, which Emil Maetzel had designed. Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen lived and worked in Hamburg until her early death.
