The image is minimally toned, the edges with wear due to the framing. The image measures 50.4 x 73 cm and the frame is 64 x 87 cm. Bernhard Kretzschmar (1889-1972) Bernhard Kretzschmar studied from 1909 until 1911 at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden. After study trips to South Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Italy he got finally accepted at the Academy in Dresden as a master pupil of Carl Bantzer. Here, he also got to know Peter August Böckstiegel and Conrad Felixmüller, with whom he founded the Gruppe 1917. At the beginning of his career, he was a representative of the Neue Sachlichkeit. After the First World War, he decided to destroy his entire hitherto created body of work. From now on, he increasingly oriented himself towards Expressionist prints. In 1932, he was a founding member of the Neue Dresdner Sezession. His art was regarded as ‘degenerate’ during National Socialism. Later, he was awarded the national prize of the GDR for his coloristic self-portraits. Works by Kretzschmar are in the possession of numerous public collections, like the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig.
