Laguna, B. Lopes de Leao (1864-1943). (Interior with three jewish scholars). Oil on canvas, (1890), 62x75 cm., signed "B. Laguna" in lower left corner, luxuriously framed. = Laguna lived in the Portuguese-Jewish orphanage in Amsterdam, from the age of 10. It was this environment and that of the Jewish synagogue that presumably formed an inspiration for this painting. The collection of the Joods-Historsich Museum in Amsterdam contains a drawing (jhm-01494) that is similar to this painting, which could be a preliminary study for the painting.
