Signed, titled and dated 1890 on the reverse Oil on canvas, 52.3 x 71.5 cm N.B.: Dommersen was born Cornelis Christiaan Dommelhuizen, the illegitimate son of Cornelia Dommelhuizen and for this reason he soon changed his surname. Dommersen often signed his works with another signature, namely C.C. Dommershuizen, Chr. Dommelshuizen, Christian Dommelshuizen and C. Dommersen. The artist specialised in seascapes during the resurgance of marine painting in the nineteenth century and is therefore seen as a master of marine painting.
