The sheet measures 88 x 62.2 cm Josef Mikl (1929-2008) Born in Vienna in 1929, Mikl attended the Grafische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt from 1946 until 1948 and afterwards studied painting under Josef Dobrowsky at the Academy of Vienna until 1955. He quickly acquired a reputation as a leading representative of the Austrian abstraction. Mikl was next to Maria Lassnig and Friedensreich Hundertwasser a member of the legendary Wiener Art Club, the most important artist meeting point of the early 1950s. After their resolution he founded the well-known Galerie nächst St. Stephan together with Wolfgang Hollegha, Markus Prachensky and Arnulf Rainer in 1956, which was to become an essential institution of post-war modernity. The painter represented Austria at the 34. Venice Biennale in 1968 and was called to the Academy of Vienna in 1969, where he took over a master class for painting.
