Oil on copper Presumably Bologna/Italy, 2nd decade of the 17th century Attributed to Denis Calvaert (1540-1619) - Flemish painter and exponent of Manierism The painting is accompanied by an expertise of Dr. Klaus Ertz from December 23, 2014 Dimensions: 28 x 21 cm Black wooden frame: 41 x 34 cm Very good condition A typical Mannerist composition of Calvaert which delights with the delicate coloring Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 30,000 Euro After his beginnings as a landscape painter, Calvaert soon dealt exclusively with religious paintings, creating, for instance, many small-format paintings on copper. The Holy Family with John the Baptist is among the pictorial themes that Calvaert visited several times and modified skillfully. Stylistically, he was initially oriented towards Parmigianino; his later works show influences of Correggio and Barocci, which is manifested, among others, in the pathetic elegance of the figures. Condition: The painting is in very good condition according to age, showing minor abrasion. The inspection under UV light reveals numerous small touch-ups to the figures and the background. The framework is more recent and in very good condition. The painting measures 28 x 21 cm, while the frame is 41 x 34 cm in size. Denis Calvaert (1540-1619) Born in Antwerp, the painter Denis Calvaert trained with Crispyn van den Queboorn from 1556. The landscape painter went then to Bologna to train in figurative painting. His teachers were Prospero Fontana and Lorenzo Sabbatini; his masters were Antonio da Correggio, Parmigianino and Pellegrino Tibaldi. After a prolonged period of study in Rome, he returned to Bologna around 1575. He established a school for young artists, which was also attended by artists such as Francesco Alberti, Guido Reni and Domenichino. Especially Calvaert’s small copper paintings found a high appeal at his time. Works by Calvaert are in the church of San Petronio, in the churches alle Graze and ai Servi in Bologna, as well as in numerous museums, including the Kunsthistorische Museum Vienna, the Uffizi in Florence and the Louve in Paris.
