Sitzender Akt Am Spiegel. 105 x 85’ Overall dimensions: 85 x 105 cm Very good condition Provenance: from the inventory of a former Berlin gallery Artists, clowns and scantily dressed dancers are typical motifs in Wellenstein’s oeuvre The present painting is titled ‘Sitzender Akt Am Spiegel’ (Sitting Nude With Mirror) and was painted by the Berlin artist Walter Wellenstein (1898-1972) in 1955. It is a typical example of his artistic output of the 1950s, when he created colorful stage-like scenes. As also seen here, he deliberately dissolved the background and the spatial structure of the room, in order to render his compositions an interesting sense of dynamic. The painting is signed and dated lower right ‘Wellenstein 55‘. It is additionally signed, dated, titled and inscribed ‘Walter Wellenstein. Berlin. 1955. Sitzender Akt Am Spiegel. 105 x 85’ on the backside. The hardboard shows slight frame marks; the overall condition is very good. The hardboard measures 85 x 105 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 96 x 117 cm. Walter Wellenstein (1898-1970) The German painter, draughtsman and graphic artist Walter Wellenstein studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and attended the class of Emil Orlik from 1918 to 1924. Wellenstein began his professional career as a book illustrator and was, for instance, involved in the creative process of books by Gogol, Tolstoi, Dostojewski, Ibsen and Strindberg. In paintings, drawings and graphic works he focused on portraits and figural compositions. Wellenstein is regarded as an important painter of the Weimar Republic.
