(The Hague 1819 - 1893) On the way to the Kaaswaag in Alkmaar Signed l.l. Oil on panel, 23.8 x 19.9 cm N.B.: In the weighhouse of Alkmaar cheese has been weighed from near and far in the region since 1581. The history of the building dates back to the fourteenth century when it was used as a chapel, it is from this period that the prominent belfry dates. The facade of the weigh house features the following caption: “SPQA RESTITVIT VIRTVS ABLATAE JVRA BILANCIS", which translates as ‘Courage and Fortitude granted government and citizens of Alkmaar the lost weighing privilege.’ Due to the courageous actions by the citizens of Alkmaar during the siege of 8 October 1573 the church authorities granted the weighing house to the citizens of Alkmaar.
