Copying and while doing so trying to learn the directness of invention and teaching the painters how to invent pictures without copying them in every detail, considering that this way of copying may generate just something of the freedom and naivity the originals are featured with. Glass paintings have to be developed within the special technical possibilities, such as painting in layers, not in translucent layers but in opaque, merging tones. And there is the form, which is depending on the the type of brush used - or the pen in black and especially in white - or using a very fine brush. Later findings on the occasion of the works for Kämmerer [referring to Schlemmer's then employer, Albrecht Kämmerer]: a minimum amount of paint, best applied with the finger, not the brush, has an exceptional effect against a black or at least a very dark ground. Another painting technique is the one on mirrorglass, which is appropriate for translucent layering, especially when transparence and fire is indicated."
