The current highest auction record for a similar painting by Johan Hamza is circa €30,000 Johann Hamza's works show an influence of the 18th century painting, as it corresponded to the taste of the time. His special attention was paid to the reproduction of the different materials and furnishings, which made him one of the most important 19th century genre painters of Austria. Condition: The painting is overall in good condition, showing some craquelure due to age and minor abrasion of the paint. The inspection under UV light reveals several retouched strengthening lines. The signature was retouched. The frame shows some losses. The size of the painting is 55 x 45 cm, and the frame measures 85 x 174 cm. Johann Hamza (1850-1925) Johann Hamza was born in Telc near Moravia in 1850. He studied at the Vienna Academy under the guidance of Eduard von Engerth. Along with the artists Isidor Kaufmann and Josef Gisela he was supported by the art dealer Schwarz and brought the genre painting to a second bloom. During his lifetime, his works enjoyed a great popularity because of their artistic quality and the subjects, so that they were often reproduced in illustrated magazines.
