EDWIN AUSTIN ABBEY (American, 1852-1911) Tennis Match, 1887 Ink and watercolor on porcelain 7-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches (19.1 x 24.1 cm) (sight) Signed and dated lower right: E. A. Abbey / 1887 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST None of the Tile Club members is known to have had any experience painting on tiles prior to an association with the club. Most tiles that have been located by the Tilers are of English manufacture. The media used for decoration was described variously as "German inks," "mineral colors," and ultimately "tubes of vitreous paints invented by Lacroix." Application of pigment had to be done quickly since the porous surface of the tile was highly absorbent.
