Oil on oval panel Russia, 1980s Leonid Purygin (1951-1995) - Russian painter and main representative of 'Art Brut' in the former USSR Signed in Cyrillic on the scroll in the upper center as well as with Cyrillic inscription Dimensions: 51.5 x 74.5 cm Very good condition Purygin's mystic compositions are very sought-after collectible works; paintings comparable in size fetch up to €46,000 in the international auction market Leonid Purygin's narrative works are populated by mythical creatures and fabulous hybrids that first remind of childlike pictures. Closer inspection unveils, however, a complex mythological system, that often bears the artist himself in the center, who seems to act as the creator and recipient of all happenings. The present painting shows a colorful scene reminiscent of a medieval simultaneous representation. The composition bears a circumferential inscription about life, love and the affected body: 'Как прекрасна жизнь моя и тело в любви находятся (М. Condition: The work is in very good and fresh condition, aside from some tiny losses of color along the edges. The dimensions of the oval panel are 51.5 x 74.5 cm. Leonid Purygin (1951-1995) Born in a small village close to Moscow, Leonid Anatolevich Purygin grew up as the son of a toy factory director and became a self-trained painter, representing the 'Art Brut' movement. His color-intensive style was deeply inspired by Russian popular art, impressions of the fantasy toy world of his childhood and Tolstoi's poetry of Buratino. Purygin's early works were rather limited to regular formats, but over the time they grew larger and turned into altars comprising different parts. Purygin received international recognition in 1988, when some of his works were sold in an auction for Russian avant-garde art at Sotheby's. In the following year he emigrated to New York, where Eduard Nakhamkin became his gallerist and cemented his international reputation.
