Oil on academy board, laid down on cardboard Greece, around 1900 Thalia Flora-Caravia (1871-1960) - Greek painter and draftswoman Signed lower right 'Thalia Flora Caravia' Dimensions: 30.3 x 51.3 cm Frame:44 x 64 cm Provenance: Private collection, Germany Flora-Caravia's works are of dynamic ductus and impressionist perception; the auction record for a painting of the artist is set at above €17,000 The Greek artist Thalia Flora-Caravia created this painting of a fishing boat in front of a coast around 1900. Due to a loose brushwork, fresh complexion and an impressionist perception of the subject matter, this work becomes an atmospheric-harmonious landscape impression. Condition: The surface is somewhat soiled. Marginal wear and slight fissures in the upper area are visible. The frame is partly repaired and some small pieces are missing. The image measures 30.3 x 51.3 cm and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 44 x 64 cm. Thalia Flora-Caravia (1871-1960) The Greek painter was born in Siatista, grew up in Constantinople and lived in Athens before she moved to Munich for her studies in 1895. Here she studied painting under Nikolaos Gyzis, Georgios Iakovidis, Anton Ažbè and Walter Thor until 1898. She was honored at the World Fair in Paris with a 'mention honorable' in 1900. She organized successful special exhibitions of her works at the art association exhibitions in Munich, Mannheim and Weimar etc. in 1905 and 1906, also in Constantinople in 1912. She received exhibition medals in Athens in 1903 and in Bordeaux in 1907. She got married to the journalist Nikos Karavias in Alexandria in 1907, where she established an art school and lived until 1940. She saw the Balkan Wars of 1912 to 1913, which appear in numerous of her works. Further awards were the silver medal of the Academy of Athens in 1945 and the Archangel's Cross of the Order of Benevolence in 1954.
