Zügel 1905' Dimensions: 38 x 60 cm Gilt stucco period frame: 60 x 82 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Heinrich Johann von Zügel (1850-1941) is one of the major German Impressionists alongside Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and Lovis Corinth. Since the 1880s, he practiced the open-air painting, for which he depicted mainly animals set in interaction with water and light. Condition: The painting is in good condition, showing slight craquelure mainly affecting the central area. The upper left margin shows a major point of retouching. The canvas has been relined. The frame shows minor signs of use. The stretcher measures 38 x 60 cm, the frame is 60 x 82 cm in size. Heinrich Johann von Zügel (1850-1941) Heinrich von Zügel trained genre and animal painting at the Art School of Stuttgart under the direction of Bernhard von Neher (1806-1886) and Heinrich von Rustige (1810-1900). From 1871, he enjoyed his first international successes and took part in the Paris World Exhibition in 1878. This was followed by study trips through Europe, which led him to the plein-air painting. In the early 1880s, von Zügel depicted increasingly in the high moorlands of Dachau, in which he staged animals as part of the landscape. He was made an honorary member of the Munich Academy and received the title of professor. His paintings are on display in major German museums, including the National Gallery in Berlin and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
