HEINRICH JOHANN VON ZÜGEL (german 1850-1941)/span SHEEP IN A MEADOW Signed and dated 'H. Zügel 18**' bottom right, oil on canvas 19 5/8 x 27 3/4 in. (49.8 x 70.5cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Virginia. note:/span A founding member of the Munich Secession--an association of artists who broke away from the conservative Munich Artists' Association - von Zügel specialized in painting what he termed 'heavy work' themed paintings: horses and plowing oxen. Working into his eighties, his paintings first acquired by museums while in his thirties, von Zügel's prodigious output also features a large number of sheep-themed paintings, as typified by the present work. After study at the art school in Stuttgart and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, it was his fellow countryman, animal painter Anton Braith, who was von Zügel's was his most important member. Sheep in a Meadow is highly typical of von Zügel's best paintings: a depiction of a group of farm animals with a concentration worked in heavy impasto, the concern with the effects of light and shadow revealing the strong influence of Impressionism.
