Fourteen-piece glass window from real antique glass, black stain and lead Germany, 1941-44 Heinrich Campendonk (1889-1957) - German-Dutch painter and graphic artist Executed in the stained glass workshop Wilhelm Derix, Düsseldorf-Kaiserwerth Exhibited at 'Kristalline Welten. Die Glasgemälde Heinrich Campendonks', Deutsches Glasmalerei-Museum Linnich, April 5 to September 28 2014, illustrated in the exhibition catalog on p.193 Dimensions: 398 x 300 cm Provenance: Stained glass workshop and estate Wilhelm Derix, Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth Very good condition, besides three small cracks in the glass (see detailed photos below) Large format glass window with impressively realized resurrection motif, originally made for the St. Columba's Church in Cologne; paintings by the artist fetch up to 2,600.000 Euro at international auctions. The artist of the Rhenish Expressionism is primarily known for his work, which he created as a member of Der Blaue Reiter. He also created works in glass, ranging from small paintings on glass in the 1910s to monumental stained glass windows for churches such as the Bonner Münster or Maria-Grün in Hamburg-Blankenese in the early 1930s. During his exile in the Netherlands, Campendonk received a commission to create five large-format glazings for the east wall of St. Columba's Church in Cologne. Finally only two glazings were performed: The birth of Christ and the present illustration of the resurrection of Christ, neither of which came to be used, as the church was destroyed during the war. In the work arranged of fourteen glass panels with the figure of the risen Christ in the center. Beside him hovers the angel who will later proclaim the resurrection to the three women, already visible in the upper left panel. In contrast to the soldiers and the surrounding landscape, these figures are executed in bright grisaille glass and thus get a transcendent charisma. The glass window was shown in the exhibition 'Kristalline Welten. Die Glasgemälde Heinrich Campendonks', which took place in Deutsches Glasmalerei-Museum Linnich from April 5 to September 28 2014. In the accompanying catalog it is illustrated on page 193 and described on pages 103 to 106. It is in very good condition and measures 398 x 300 cm. The window is actually located at the Deutsche Glasmalerei-Museum in Linnich and can be previewed during the opening hours. The shipping can only be arranged from January on. Heinrich Campendonk (1889-1957) From 1905 to 1909 he studied under Jan Thorn-Prikker at the school for applied arts in Krefeld. Soon he became a member of the Blauer Reiter group and took part at their exhibitions in 1911 and 1912. In 1923 he taught at the school for applied arts in Essen. 1926 he was appointed professor for glass painting, mural art and mosaic the art academy in Düsseldorf. In 1934 he immigrated cross Belgium to Amsterdam. During his exile he learnt from his work was being classified as 'degenerated'. His work is characterized by the strict geometrical use of forms and oscillates between cubism, expressionism and futurism.
