Depicted is, executed in oil on strong structured sketch paper, a lake surrounded by trees with a swan. The choice of color is fresh and the brushstroke lively - entirely in the sense of the Dutch Fauvist, who broke with tradition to shape his own style. The oil sketch is signed and dated lower left 'JAN SLUYTERS 19'. The sheet is in very good condition. It is minimally toned. It has been torn from the pad at the upper edge. The frame shows traces of use. The sheet measures 42 x 29.7 cm and the overall dimensions, including the frame, are 53 x 39.5 cm. Jan Sluyters (1881-1957) The Dutch painter Jan Sluyters (also known as Johannes Carolus Bernardus Sluijters) studied painting in his hometown Den Bosch and in Amsterdam together with Leo Gestel since 1901. Sluyters experimented with different styles, like Fauvism which he got to know during a study trip to France in 1906. And also with Cubism until he finally found the Expressionism. In 1913, three of his works were chosen for the Erster deutscher Herbstsalon in Berlin. He was a member of the artists association Pulchri Studio in Den Haag and of the artists association Arti et Amicitae. He focused on nudes, portraits, landscapes, and still lives. He is known to have broken with tradition and for developing a very personal style of his own. He exhibited some of his works for the first time in 1927 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Today, works of his can be found in important national museums of the Netherlands, like the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
