It is an example of the Art Deco paintings of Dupas, which often create a surrealist, idealized pastoral landscape as a setting for his figures, gracefully distorted by elegant elongation. It is easy to recognize a 'Dupas woman' - the hair is stylized, her eyes are almond shaped, the mouth is small but full, and her neck is always elongated. His style, based on the new precepts of Cubism, is related to that of Van Dongen, de la Fresnaye, and Leger. The stretcher is chamfered at the upper and lower corners. The condition is very good. The stretcher measures 100 x 64 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 109 x 72.7cm. Jean Dupas (1882-1964) Jean Dupas was part of the School of Bordeaux, whose other members were also well-known artists, like Robert Eugene Pougheon, René Buthaud, Jean Gabriel Domergue, Raphael Delorme as well as his close friend Alfred Janniot. He won the Prix de Rome in 1910 and spent several years in Italy, where he created 'Le Pigeons Blanc', which was honored as one of the first Art Deco paintings with the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1922. He participated in the Grand Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. Dupas is also known for decorating the interiors of the Île-de-France and the Liberté, as well as the SS Normandie of 1934, for which he created verre eglomisé panels for the Grand Salon. Portions of this mural are now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and also at the Forbes Galleries in New York. He was one of the most important decorative painters of the comprehensive redesign of the Paris of the 19th century. His teacher Albert Besnard was one of the most famous academically oriented mural painters. Dupas became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1941.
