Shown is a finely executed genre scene in which a beggar musician is busy with his instruments, being gently emphasized by the skillful lighting. Like a still life the painter also placed other musical instruments and related utensils as well as various jars. The rather dark room is illuminated a little reddish by the fireplace in the right. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'Kern H. 1882'. It is in good age-appropriate condition. Partially some age-related craquelure and occasional touch-ups in the representation visible under UV light. The painting measures 50.5 x 64 cm. The framed dimensions are 69 x 82cm. The frame with slight traces of use. Hermann Kern (1838-1912) Hermann Kern, also known as Hermann Armin von Kern, was born in 1838 in the Hungarian Liptoujvar. In 1852 he took first drawing lessons in Prague. In the Mid-1850's he began to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Carl Rahl. In 1867 he received a scholarship for the Academy in Düsseldorf, in 1870 he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied with Carl Theodor von Piloty.
