Brouwer is best-known for his lively tavern scenes in which he likes to concentrate on groups of figures. This subject matter depicts a peasant couple contemplating an apple. Typically for Brouwer, he rendered his paintings as in this case on small sized panels. His works were collected by Rembrandt and Rubens and had a great influence on Flemish and Dutch genre painters, such as David Teniers the Younger. The painting is in very good condition. There are a few minimal old dabs, as well as insignificant superficial small scratches and stains. On the frame are color chips, minimal losses of material and amendments. The wooden panel measures 16.6 x 19.5 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 29.6 x 32.7 cm. Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638) Adriaen Brouwer was probably born in the Flemish Oudenaerde in 1605. As a young man he went to Holland, where he has learned in the studio of Frans Hals. In 1630 he moved to Antwerp where he was accepted in the St. Luke's Guild in 1931. His paintings that were appreciated very much by Rubens, also show some influences by this painter. They mostly concerned themselves with the common people whose lives and portraits he kept in genre scenes and tronies. His works chronologically speak more and more of a subtle color palette and the individual character of the depicted is in the foreground of his later works. His paintings can today be found in mostly all of the world's great museums, such as the Wallace Collection in London, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Royal Museum in Antwerp, the Pinakothek in Munich, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
