Gaganendranath Tagore was one of the first Indian modernist painters and, together with Rabindranath Tagore (his nephew) and Abanindranath Tagore (his younger brother), he was an influential force in the modernisation of Indian art and culture. Through the periodical Rupam, a periodical published by the Indian Society of Oriental Art which he founded with his brother in 1907, India was first introduced to modernist Western art. The first exhibition of Bauhaus outside Europe was held in Calcutta in 1922 under the auspices of the Society of Indian Art and brought Gaganendranath Tagore and his brother into contact with modernist art, as the three drawings/ watercolours in our present sale show. These works came into possession of the parents of the present owner before World War II and have remained in the family ever since. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCIII.
