CHARLES EPHRAIM BURCHFIELD (American, 1893-1967) November Light, 1921 Watercolor and pencil on paper 14 x 20 inches (35.6 x 50.8 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Burchfield 1921 PROPERTY FROM THE KING COLLECTION, TEXAS PROVENANCE: Peter Ornstein, Brooklyn, New York; Forum Galleries, New York; Pensler Galleries, Washington, D.C.; Cline Fine Art Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Executed in Buffalo, New York, November Light is a stark and brooding depiction of local industrial structures in a cold, working-class town. Painted in 1921 November Light is one of Burchfield's earliest industrial scenes, reflecting the Regionalists' and Social Realists' fascination with portraying a very personal and indigenous America on completely American terms. In 1921, Burchfield moved to Buffalo, New York, where until 1929, he worked as a wallpaper designer for the M.H. Birge and Sons Wallpaper Company. The artist lived the remainder of his life in Buffalo, devoting himself full-time to painting subjects ranging from sentimental to surreal and even abstract, well into the 1960s.
