THOMA, HANS 1839 Bernau - 1924 Karlsruhe Landscape in the Black Forest. Oil on canvas. 51,5 x 65 cm. Monogrammed lower right: H.Th. (alloyed). Framed. The farmer's son from Bernau in the southern Black Forest was a landscaping student of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe just like Arnold Böcklin. Thanks to his famous teacher of landscape painting Thoma was trained in the accurate observation of nature. A journey to Paris in 1868 let him have a deep impression of Courbet's art, the school of Barbizon and Millets. In Munich the influence of the painting of the Leibl-cicrle was added to that. Finally in 1899 the artist was called to Karlsruhe where he became the director of the Gallery and professor at the Art School until 1919. The present Black Forest landscape is an example of just how well Thoma succedes in depicting his home in a particular pictorial liveliness. The cornfield which is in close sight in the lower half of the painting quasi takes the observer of the work into this landscape. Due to the cheerful intense colours of nature this summery day evokes a light-hearted atmosphere. Two tall leaf trees in the center of the work block the view on the village at the bottom of a mountain. The light-blue sky with white clouds emphasizes the luscious colours of the masterly depicted late summer landscape. Due to the simplicity and impressivness of his works Hans Thoma is highly appreciated till this very day.
