Other Notes: This painting is likely a re-envisioning of Ilya Repin's (Russian, 1844-1930) Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire, also called Cossacks of Saporog Are Drafting a Manifesto. It depicts a 1676 story of the Cossack's raucous and rebellious response to the Ottoman Emperor's demand that they submit to Turkish rule.
