Watercolour over pencil Circa 1875 Unframed 23 x 43cm (9 1/8 x 17 in) The great gothic revival canopy of the Albert Memorial was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott to commemorate Queen Victoria's beloved consort, who had died in 1861. It was unveiled in 1872, fittingly sited where the Crystal Palace had stood for the Great Exhibition, that had so absorbed the Prince's energies. But the gilded statue, depicted here, was not installed until 1875.
