The impasto painting is characterized by blue-green hilltops partly submerged in the snow, which are outlined by bold lines in black. Some conifers soar in the center of the foreground. Fraaß shows here much of the art of Expressive Realism. Building on the achievements of modern art of the turn of the century, the color as space and form creating element was the most important artistic device of the movement. The painting is signed with '*Fraaß' lower left. It is in a good overall condition considering its age. The paint surface shows some craquelure and small losses of color, particularly along the edges. Inspection under UV light reveals several areas of retouching within the depiction. The dimensions of the stretcher are 81 x 112 cm. Erich Fraaß (1893-1975) Erich Fraaß first trained the technique of lithography, before he attended the School of Applied Arts in Dresden. From 1913 to 1914, he studied at the Art Academy under Oskar Zwintscher. From 1919 to 1922, he continued his studies under Robert Sterl. He then worked as a freelance artist. In 1921, Fraaß was a member of the artist group 'Die Schaffenden' in the circle of Conrad Felixmüller. In 1931, he was a co-founder and president of the 'Neue Dresdner Sezession', which was banned in 1934. In 1933, the artist was classified 'degenerate', and in 1935, he was deprived from his artistic status. After World War II, Fraaß worked on the board of the Anti-Fascist Council of Trust for visual artists. From 1953 to 1958, he was a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden.
