The painting dates back to the 19th century and is the work of a follower of Joshua Reynolds. The latter is regarded the most sought after British portraitist of 18th century, as his approach of combining portrait and history painting especially appealed to his noble and aristocratic client base. His so called 'Grand Style' depended on the idealization of the imperfect and may be also recognized in a portrait painted in 1787, now located in the National Gallery in London. It depicts the very same Lord Heathfield riding on a horse and with the view of the siege at Gibraltar in the background. The painting is in good condition considering its age. The canvas is relined and shows lights marks along the edges, where the frame has rubbed. The paint surface is affected by scattered areas of craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals tiny areas of retouching to the face, the costume and the background. The frame is also in good condition with small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 94.5 x 81.5 cm and the size of the stretcher is 76.5 x 63 cm. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
