The abundance of mother-of-pearl shells in the Philippines made it the perfect keepsake or souvenir for visitors to the islands in the late 19th century.  Their resiliency and iridescent quality provided a beautiful ground on to which charming genre scenes and still lifes were painted by European and local artists, among them Juan Luna y Novicio, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, and Dr. Jose Rizal.
